The Institute and the recruiting departement

French Research Institute for Exploitation of the Sea, Ifremer, through its research work and expert advice, contributes to knowledge of the oceans and their resources, to monitoring of marine and coastal environments and to the sustainable development of marine activities. To these ends, Ifremer conceives and operates tools for observation, experimentation and monitoring, and manage the oceanographic databases.

Created in 1984, Ifremer is a French public institute of an industrial and commercial nature. It is supervised jointly by the Ministry of Higher Education and Research and the Ministry of the Environment, Energy and Marine Affairs.

Ifremer undertakes research missions, offers expert advice and acts as a funding agency.

Ifremer performs targeted applied research to address the questions posed by society (climate change effects, marine biodiversity, pollution prevention, seafood quality etc.). Results include scientific knowledge, technological innovations, and systems for ocean observation and exploration. Partnerships may be public, private or a combination of the two.

Ifremer works in a network with the French scientific community, also collaborating with international partner organizations, in the frame of several national and international projects, including contractual activities.

Description de l'offre:

The hosting centre

The LITTORAL Unit is made up of nine Environment and Resources Laboratories (LER) covering the metropolitan coastline. Its main missions are coastal observation, the study of coastal and shellfish ecosystems, the monitoring of the quality of shellfish production in the natural environment, and the carrying out of expertise and advice for the conservation services of the state. The lagoon ecosystem is at the center of LER / LR research projects in Sète, covering (1) the impact of natural or anthropogenic environmental fluctuations on the functioning of lagoon ecosystems, (2) the ecological restoration processes of these ecosystems and (3) the mediation between the good ecological status and the maintenance of shellfish farming.

Since January 2015, the LER/LR has integrated the Joint Research Unit (UMR) MARBEC, MARine Biodiversity, Exploitation and Conservation, whose supervisory authorities are IRD, Ifremer, University of Montpellier and CNRS. MARBEC is one of the largest laboratories working on marine biodiversity and its uses in France with about 230 agents, including 80 scientists and teacher-scientists.

Presentation of the job vacancy and its position in the organization chart :

The canditate will be placed under the responsibility of the manager of the Laboratory Environment and Resources of Occitania in Sète, and integrated within the UMR MARBEC. As an engineer in benthic ecology, he / she will work in close collaboration with the scientists, engineers and technicians involved in this topic.

Main missions

The benthic compartment, especially macrophytes, plays a key role in the functioning of Mediterranean lagoon ecosystems. Among the key functions already described, macrophytes contribute to the regulation of nutrient flows, have impacts on toxic phytoplankton blooms (especially through allelopathic effects) and provide habitats for lagoon species. In this context, the engineer will be the LER referent for data collection and taxonomy of macrophytes. He / She will intervene, in support of the project managers, in the observation activities (DCE, Observation unit of the UMR), the research in benthic ecology (projects CHAMILA, NURSE, MARHA ...) and will contribute to the opinions and expertise in link with benthic ecology.

Main activities

He / She will provide the following activities:
- coordination, planning of LER field and laboratory activities in the sector of benthic ecology
- taxonomic identification of macrophytes (in situ and in the laboratory)
- in situ observations and sampling
- work on observation and mapping methods in benthic ecology
- piloting studies, experiments and analyzes (in situ and / or in the laboratory) related to benthic ecology
- data processing (statistical analysis, indicator calculations, GIS, ...)
- data banking (Internal database, Quadrige2)
- expertise, writing reports and opinions related to benthic ecology
- contribution to the setting up of research projects in collaboration with the scientists of his discipline.

He / she will contribute to the life of the LER / LR and UMR MARBEC (data collection for observation and research activities, topics, departments and technical platforms meetings).

Relational scopes

Externally: University of Perpignan, University of Western Brittany, Tour du Valat, GIS Posidonie, RMC Water Agency, French Agency for Biodiversity, lagoon’s management structures.
